Geographic (011, 021, 031) vs national 087 numbers
South African business numbers come in two flavours: geographic codes tied to a city, and non-geographic 087 numbers that belong to no particular place. Neither is better in the abstract — they signal different things.
A geographic code — 011 for Johannesburg, 021 for Cape Town, 031 for Durban, 041 for Gqeberha and so on — tells a caller roughly where you are. For a plumber, an attorney, a supplier or anyone whose customers are local, that recognition matters. People answer and trust numbers that look local to them.
An 087 number is national. It says 'this is a business operating across South Africa' and gives away no location. For a company serving the whole country, that is an advantage rather than a gap.
When to choose a geographic number
Your customers are concentrated in one city or province.
You compete locally and want to look local.
You advertise in local directories, on vehicle signage or on regional listings.
You want a specific city presence without opening a physical office there — a VoIP 021 number works from anywhere.
When to choose 087
You sell nationally and no single city defines you.
You want one number that stays constant regardless of where the team sits.
You would rather not tell callers which city you are in.
You can run both
These are not mutually exclusive. A common setup is an 087 number as the main published contact plus geographic numbers for specific regional markets — an 031 on KwaZulu-Natal material, an 021 on Western Cape material — all ringing the same team.
Because VoIP numbers are not tied to a physical line, adding a second area code does not mean adding an office. See the full area code table for what each code covers.
What does not differ
Both are ordinary South African business numbers. Both can be ported in, both work on the same plans, and both deliver the same SIP credentials. The choice is about positioning, not capability.
Frequently asked questions
Is an 087 number a premium-rate number?+
No. 087 is a non-geographic number range used for ordinary business calls. It is not a premium-rate line.
Can I have both an 087 and a geographic number?+
Yes. Many businesses publish an 087 nationally and use geographic numbers for specific regional markets, all ringing the same team.
Do I need an office in a city to use its area code?+
No. Hopetel numbers are VoIP, so a 021 Cape Town number can be answered from anywhere in the country.
Which area code covers my town?+
See the full South African area code table, which lists every geographic code from 010 to 058 with the province and towns it covers.
